Every now and again it occurs to me that real life is becoming increasingly indistinguishable from a pulp science fiction novel circa 1983. We have an International Space Station. We have 3D printers that essentially function like Star Trek replicators. We’re fighting wars with robots.
Yet another future-is-now scenario unfolded this week in New York City when late-night legend David Letterman welcomed his latest musical guest — a Japanese pop star who also happens to be a hologram.
New Chip To Beam Smartphone Holograms
Hatsune Miku is a bonafide superstar in Japan, and recently wrapped up a tour opening for Lady Gaga. Her first album went to number one on the Japanese charts, and she’s collaborated with everyone from opera professionals and Pharrell Williams. Not bad for a piece of software.
Developed by a Japanese company called Crypton Future Media, Hatsune Miku — the name translates roughly to “Future Sound” — is actually one of several “Vocaloid” singers making music in East Asia. Her voice is synthesized from vocal samples provided by actress Saki Fujita, in both English and Japanese.
How Holograms Are Getting Better Than Ever
But it’s onstage that Hatsune Miku really glows. Literally. Using technology similar to the systems that brought us hologram Tupac and hologram Michael Jackson, the virtual singer appears as a 3-D cartoon come to life. Specifically, an impossibly proportioned teenage anime figure with turquoise pig tails.
Next up for the digital pop star: Appearances at the Hatsune Miku Art Exhibition taking place simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles. Miku will perform with invited DJs, in both cities, at the same time. Neat trick, that.
