Definition of Strain

Strain is the measure of deformation in a material or object. Normal strain, ε (epsilon), expresses the change in the location of a point. A positive normal strain indicates that the material has been lengthened, whereas a negative normal stress indicates the material has contracted. Shear strain, γ (gamma), expresses the difference between two originally perpendicular points in the material, and the two points after the material has experienced deformation. A decrease in angle between the two points is a positive shear strain; an increase in angle between the two points is a negative strain. Strain is often measured in order to determine the stress within a material.
